Broomberg and Chanarin
Broomberg and Chanarin are two artists working in London together. The two artists have achieved an international reputation for their photogenic. moving image and performance works that grapple with themes around warfare, surveillance, historical truth.Recently the duo symbolically marked the end of there collaboration since working together since the late 90s. In 2013 they became the first pair to win the prestigous Deutsche Börse foundation prize as they showed off their brilliant partner ship. Looking into research of the pair I decided to go look at some of their work in the past. Early in Broomberg and chanarin partnership the duo travelled to Afghanistan as embedded journalists In place of their medium format camera, the pair operated as handlers for a 50 meter length of photographic paper rolled and sealed in a light proof cardboard box. They then exposed the seven - meter sections of the paper into the sun for 20 seconds each. In September to October 2008 they exhibited six photos from the series. Take a look
‘Scarti’- Broomberg and chanarin.
During todays lesson we was looking at some images from Broomberg and Chanarins collection called ‘scarti’. As we was discussing about the photos I decided to search up what the world ‘Scarti’ means and it came up as refusal , denial and it also means scraps in italian as the class discussion got in dept we finally realised where some of the photographs were taken in. They were taken in a mental asylum psychiatric hospital . I believe that broomberg and chanarins decided to name the collection ‘scarti’in order to normalise mental homes and to spread awareness about homes such as these; and to send a message that they should not be seen as outcast to society and that we should stop refusing to see people in psychiatric homes as rejects.
The photos have all have a very similar look the overlapping of the photos and the contrast between the light & dark images really shows the message the two artist are trying to send out.

My response
During todays lesson we tried to reciprocate broomberg and chanarins version of ‘scarti’.While looking at photos in scarti one thing I realised was how there isn’t a clear subject within the photograph and how Broomberg and chanarin layer up photos by editing. While we did not edit the photos we made sure that there was more than one thing going on at a time and that the photographs looked natural . However we should have made sure the background was clear like the photos of the patients in scarti.
part 2 :
www: While taking our second set of photos our focus was making sure the subject was clear which is why we made sure we had a white backround. While taking these photos we wanted to have less colour than our other set of photos especially our props we also was a lot less serious than the other photographs. The props we used were also very simple an empty perfume bottle and a magnifying glass. The risks we used was taking photos with glass as the glass could have smashed.
EBI: We could improve these photos by using my props and also taking them in different places so they could all look unique and different .

Hisham Benohoud.
Hisham was inspired by his years as a teacher. He developed a photographic approach based upon staging ,he borrowed objects from the classroom and used them to portray his model in an unorthodox 'decor'. One thing I really like in Hisham photographs is how natural the photographs look and how the students in the background are just doing their work and not paying attention to the photos being taken in front of them. Hisham actually gave his students specific poses and gestures to adopt and a range of accessories including nests of boxes, wire broken mirrors and large rolls of paper or fabric. The shackled and bound bodies are depicted in an enclosed space, since the classroom windows can be barely seen making use of the light critical in the transformation of these young people into 'living sculptures'.

Collaborative Photoshoot
In class today we were all told to write a description of an character we was told to include things such as the age , the hobbies , what they loved taking photographs of. I really enjoyed this task as I was able to really be as creative as I wanted and express all my dreams and thoughts onto paper. Miss then collected the papers and gave another person our work so I ended up with someone else’s work and we was then asked to step into that persons life and take photographs like they would .This person was a photographer who had a child and would take photos of streets in London in her spare time .
my description
evaluation
Overall I am unhappy with the photographs I was meant to take and this is because I felt as if it was cliche and boring. Don’t get me wrong I love taking photographs of the streets in London and visiting cinemas but I felt like it was an everyday thing people already do. I wanted to get out my comfort zone and take photographs of places and things I’ve never taken photos of. I also feel like on my behalf I misread the description I was given and did not fully commit to the storyline .

martino marangtoni
The artist I have decided to research is Martino Marangoni after looking at his book alone together .While looking at the book what drew me in was the fact that when I first saw the book I was confused about the title and the juxtaposition of title Alone Together but as I opened the book and looked at the photographs inside the book everything clicked together. The images very abstract and speak for themselves. The project includes photographs from major cities such as New York ,Boston, Paris , London , The Hague etc .I feel like Martino Marangoni is portraying no matter how many people you are surrounded by and with you will always feel alone and isolated in big cities. The purpose of the project is to examine contemporary architectural space and capture the mood and psychological effect it brings to bare on the inhabitants. Martino Marangoni was born in florence in 1950 and moved to New York in 1972. Martino Marangoni work has appeared in solo group shows in Italy and abroad. The making of alone together took a span of 8 years in a time where mobile phones have become portable offices wifi have been installed in city squares and yet even in this time of hyper-connectivity ,our public spaces remain solitary realms.Martino states that "They are microcosms for todays society, where you can be in a crowd but be completely isolated. Martino lives in Florence a city known for its Renaissance architecture. Martino had always loved his New York roots he discovered New York as a child.
martino marangtoni work.
During todays lesson we was instructed to take photos like the photographer we have been studying. I mainly focused on taking photos of people alone or with a peer alone. I drew inspiration from Marangoni on where he would take photos of random people as he walked past them and would not give them eye contact in a way to capture the private inner expressions of individuals as they move around . I really enjoyed taking these photos as it felt as if I was the only one watching and observing . Taking these photos really taught me how everyone lives are separate and that different people do different things at the same time, place, However we are all too self centred to realise it. One other thing I also realised was that how quiet these photographs seems because usually when I take photographs there is multiple things at a time and you could focus on more than one things whereas in these photographs the subject is really clear and it’s just photos of people doing there daily tasks and activities however I was able to capture one second of it .This is also links to the work I am doing with my photography teach on how photography captures the right exact timing of everything.
Overall I really enjoyed taking this photographs and researching into the artist martini marangoni.

Review
During class today we was looking at this copy of paul grahams”photography is easy photography is difficult “ . When I first looked at the title I was confused on the oxymoronic title and questioned what he meant by photography being easy but also difficult however as I read through the text I started understanding what he meant . Paul graham used a lot of repetition and short sentences showing how although photography is seen as “easy “ and anyone can take a photograph by just using a camera or an phone with a click of a button, many people tend to overthink it including myself I usually feel like every photograph I take should have an meaning to it However there are times when I just can’t take a photograph of something not because I don’t want to but because I tend to overthink the whole situation for example my project I am doing in class now although I have the ideas and have a clear view on what I want to take photographs of . I am just not able to start the project because of the fear that the photograph might not turn out how I want .
Laura El-Tantawy.
During todays lesson Miss showed me an amazing artist named Laura El- Tantawy and her book Beyond Here is Nothing .Researching about the artist I found out that she wasn’t an actual photographer before her mothers devastating sudden death which lead Tantawy to flee home to Egypt she then realised that the place she grew up with nostalgic memories was no longer beautiful and peaceful it had been destroyed by wars. The homes the streets the children all looked different she then realised she had the power to document. After watching one of Laura’s documentaries you can see a clear pattern on her photography skills and how she takes the photographs is the moment and how she pairs it with another amazing clear photograph. Laura prides herself on her idependent identity as a visual creative . Her goal as an artist is to produce socially engaged, unique and thought provoking work . I watched laura el tantawy short film in the shadow of the pyramid. This is an project she did in Egypt during the arab spring. Laura started to document the lives of every egyptian in 2005 she took pictures of things she would see right infront of her such as markets, weekend outings . Laura also stated that she wants to document a new chapter in Egypt story the purpose of this is to identify the essence of being Egyptian during & after the mubarak era.
my photographs #1
During the weekend I finally decided to make a start on my project after a long time of procrastinating and not knowing where to start after being inspired by the artist laura el tantawy and her work and how she turnt her art into a meaningful piece that meant something to her. Laura work is based on childhood memory and how she went back to egypt to take photographs of places she used to be as a kid and how it has changed over time this really inspired me as it showed how photography is always seen as something that is meant to appeal to the people who view your work but if you look and laura’s work it looks natural she took the photos of everything nothing specific nothing beautiful just of things she wanted to she also took them straight away no setting up a tripod no overpriced camera she used her phone and it just showed me a different perspective of photography and how photography is actually much more than how it is perceived. I decided to go to shepherd bush market because it’s a place I went to a lot growing up because my dad and his family live in west london so everytime me and my siblings wanted to just look around and look at the things we wanted to buy we would go there so when I was trying to think of a nostalgic memory that I wanted to express my first thought was to go back to shepherd bush and take photos of the stalls and the difference in people .
slideshow work#1.
I wasn’t able to get the screenshots I took on the computer however I was smart enough to take some behind the scenes photo on my phone . I decided to make a slideshow with the photographs taking inspirations from Laura. After making the slideshow I was impressed with how it came out however it wasn’t the best after talking to miss about my slideshow I wanted to take a voice recording of my mother and me walking the streets of shepherd’s bush and just talking about some memories but that plan failed as after I took the recording you could barely hear our voices just the wind .So now I am thinking about probably putting a different recording in the background but I am not sure what .
